Deacon Johnston

Deacon was called to the bar in 2024 after a stint as a solicitor with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service, during which time he gained significant advocacy experience in a variety of court settings. Prior to that, he was the Associate to his Honour Justice Philip Morrison on the Queensland Court of Appeal.

Maintaining a broad commercial practice, he has a particular interest in the areas of taxation, competition and consumer, industrial and employment, and building and construction law.

Having obtained a Bachelor of Laws with Distinction from the University of Southern Queensland whilst working more than 60 hours a week as a garbage truck driver, Deacon’s commitment to hard work is unquestionable. His tenacious and determined approach to litigation ensures that he leaves no stone unturned in order to achieve the best possible outcome.

Deacon tutors privately, and as part of indigenous pathways programs at both the Queensland University of Technology, and the University of Southern Queensland in a broad variety of subjects. He is also on sessional academic lists at both institutions.
